Depression? Me too! A Client's Perspective.

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Do you have depression?

Struggle with fitness and nutrition?

Well... ditto.

Hi! My name is Maria, I’m a client of the Health and Fitness Collective, (Online Fitness & Nutrition program) and work within psychology research. I started the program to improve my mental and physical health overall and am excited to share my discoveries with you! So far, I have found that this program has alleviated some of my depression. My mood has elevated, I sleep better, I have more energy, less anxiety, and my interest in activities has improved.

Before this program, I thought ...

I’m depressed, I don’t have the energy for this!

If you are like me, you may not have enough energy because of your current diet. Well, from my experience this program takes very little energy & time. I’ve spent 5-10 minutes a day reading the lessons and just a few hours a week on exercise. Taylor, The Ever-Persistent Coach, set the correct pace for me, (read: slow), and focused on the basics so I wasn’t overwhelmed. And I wasn’t! If anything I wanted more lessons.

The simplicity of the program, the ease of use, Taylor’s encouragement, and (much appreciated) reminders made this accomplishable for me. Those reminders, (from the program and Taylor), are especially important in my case, and for others with depression because memory loss is prevalent in mood disorders.

Guess what helps improve memory?

My nutrition and exercise program started with short walks and guided meditations and I’m following quick easy tips like, take time to look at your environment when you eat, (ie; are you distracted?), eat slowly, and stop when you’re 80% full. The pace and the simplicity of my program made it easy for me to follow and has already helped me improve my mental and physical awareness.

The fact that I could do all of this at home in my PJs, (yay for internet!), was probably the main reason I was able to complete the activities. At times depression has made it hard for me to want to leave the house and impossible to get to an exercise class on time. The gym? Please. Expecting me to schedule time in my day to get dressed, pack clean clothes, drive to the gym, find parking, stash my stuff in the locker, wait forever for each machine, work out with people watching me, go take off the clothes, take a shower, put clean clothes on, and drive home? HAH! Not gonna happen. Completely unrealistic.

The online activities helped me set realistic goals. They helped focus my attention on what truly matters to me and why I am doing this.

My long term goal?

The ability to do push-ups at 80 years old.

My current short term goal?

One push-up. At 29 years old. Baby steps.

Taylor helped me turn my goals into SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely). SMART goal: I want to do one pushup, where my chest touches the floor and my core stays tight, without pain, by May 1st, 2020. This is right before my 30th birthday... talk about an incentive!

But for right now, I’m just walking, eating fruits & veggies, and meditating. Push-ups come later. Stay tuned for Part 2 to see if I accomplish my goal.
