Type-2 Diabetes: What is it?

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Type-2 Diabetes is a disease in which your blood sugar (aka blood glucose), is too high. Blood glucose (sugar in your blood) mainly comes from the food you eat, and is your main source of energy. Glucose (sugar) gets into your cells to be used for energy and is regulated by insulin(hormone). When someone has Type 2 Diabetes their body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Due to this too much glucose stays in your blood, and not enough reaches your cells. Because not enough glucose is reaching your cells a common symptom of type-2 diabetes is fatigue (how fast someone gets exhausted).

Here is a bad analogy: Think of Type-2 Diabetes as overly caffeinated Starbucks coffee, the more you have the less it will affect you, (ie; you build a resistance). Now replace caffeine with insulin. Yes, we realize that is an oversimplification, but it's important to have a general understanding of where Type-2 diabetes comes from.

By the way, one Starbucks Venti White Chocolate Mocha has 18 teaspoons (72 grams!) full of sugar. It does NOT help the medicine go down...

Speaking of spoons. Enter The Spoon Theory. It's a helpful metaphor when explaining one's life with a chronic illness like Type-2 Diabetes. The idea is that one is only allotted a certain number of "spoons" a day. Spoons are tasks that require energy whether physical, emotional, or mental. Those with Type-2 Diabetes have A LOT fewer spoons, to begin with, compared to their healthy counterparts. Remember the fatigue symptom we discussed earlier? Every day every task takes another spoon (aka energy). Then you're out of spoons for the day.

Thought you were the only one?

“More than 34 million Americans have diabetes, (about 1 in 10), and approximately 90-95% of them have type-2 diabetes.” (CDC 2019)
