Last month we focused on type-2 diabetes and so we decided to follow it with PCOS since “more than half of women with PCOS develop type 2 diabetes by age 40.” (CDC) Women with PCOS are at higher risk for diabetes because they are often insulin resistant; their bodies can make insulin but can’t use it effectively.
So, what is PCOS exactly?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder represented with at least two of the following symptoms: irregular periods, excess androgen, and polycystic ovaries.

Those that are overweight or obese typically have more severe symptoms. PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility and lifestyle changes can help drastically improve symptoms.
What lifestyle changes? Well, diet and exercise!
If you have been diagnosed with PCOS you probably hear this all the time- Weight loss is one of the most important aspects of lessening the symptoms of PCOS. “Even a loss of 10–15 pounds can be helpful in making menstrual periods more regular. (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists)
Weight loss can help;
Improve cholesterol.
Improve insulin levels.
Relieve symptoms of acne.
Regulate your menstrual cycle.
Relieve symptoms of excess hair growth.
Reduce the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
Even without weight loss, changing to healthier nutrition habits and exercising regularly can help improve hormone production and regulation (endocrine function), reproductive function, and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease (Farshichi, 2007).
